When making meals for my family I keep in mind the food pyramid. Knowing that we need grains in our diet daily. One of the ways I make sure my family gets their grains is by not only pastas, cereals but in breads. My kids ask almost daily for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches which is a great way for them to get their daily grain servings.

November is National Bread Month! This year marks the 250th anniversary of the sandwich. In 1762, Sir John Montagu - the 4th Earl of Sandwich - requested his dinner meat be served between two slices of bread, as he did not want to put his cards down in the midst of a game of poker. Thus, the sandwich was born, and a couple of centuries later, we still celebrate this tasty innovation. The Grain Foods Foundation embraces the many different ways we incorporate bread and other grain-based foods into our diet, and November marks the start of National Bread Month! Besides the delicious taste, bread and grains also provide many nutrients our bodies need to stay healthy and energized. A non-profit organization, the Grain Foods Foundation is dedicated to advancing public knowledge of the important role grain-based foods play in our diet and lifestyle. A plethora of nutrition information, recipes and tips can be found on its website.

Our growing family eats alot of bread! We typically go through a load of bread every 2 days. I want my family to get the healthiest breads so when I shop for bread I look for whole wheats, low sugar and no corn fructose syrup.  Some of the delicious ways we eat bread in our home are sandwiches, french toast, toast and when I need to bread chicken I make my own fresh bread crumbs using whole grain bread!
Many days taking a break from our homeschooling my kids ask for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and sometimes I change it up a bit by making almond butter and jelly, peanut butter and banana or strawberry sandwiches. Sometimes I even cut their sandwiches in fun shapes!
One of my personal sandwiches I like to make is a grilled cheese with fresh cooked spinach!

Butter top and bottom pieces of bread and add the fresh cooked spinach in between Boars Head All American Chicken Breast deli meat and American Cheese and then grill as you would a grilled cheese sandwich!  In this sandwich I am getting my grains, protein and vegetable servings!   Why are grains so important in a balanced diet? ~ The complex carbohydrates in bread and other grain-based foods provide essential fuel the body needs. ~ Grain foods are a major source of iron, a key nutrient in the production and release of energy to the body. ~ Enriched grains are the primary source of folic acid in Americans' diets and have been shown to reduce specific types of neural tube defects. ~ Enriched grains provide our bodies with essential B vitamins (niacin, thiamine and riboflavin), which collectively help maintain a healthy nervous system and increase energy production, and which may help lower cholesterol. ~ Whole grains are naturally low in fat. ~ Whole grains contain important nutrients such as selenium, potassium and magnesium, which collectively may help boost immunity, lower blood pressure and prevent heart disease and some forms of cancer. ~ Whole grains are a good source of fiber. ~ Whole grains lower the risk of irritable bowel syndrome and diverticular disease.  So what will your next sandwich be?
