One of my favorite memories as a child was when my grandfather read to me. I remember ordering those skinny little paperbacks from the schoolastic reader and rushing home with them in my lunchbox. At night, my little sister and I would get ready for bed, snuggle under the covers and wait for Grandpa to begin reading. For thirty minutes my sister and I were transported to another planet, or back in time to play with the dinosaurs, to an adventure with a new friend, or some other wonderful place that became a feast for our imaginations. Nothing, in my opinion, stimulates the imagination quite like reading. Visual stimulation, such as television or video games, have their place, but it can also be an inherent distraction to the imagination. With the written word, I am required to supply a good dose of imagination to conjure, envision, and evoke a landscape of my own making, prompted by the author's offering.
If there is one thing that became my springboard to creativity, it was my Grandpa reading to me every night, sharing his time, and his love with me and my sister. Read to your children, read with them, read for them, read as if their lives depended upon it, because it just might.
